Laminated glass is also called safety glass. It has been around for over 100 years and has been an important deterrent to glass injuries in automobiles, commercial buildings and other applications. Laminted glass typically consists of two layers of glass with a sheet of plastic between them. This plastic 'interlayer' is often polyvinyl butyral or PVB.
When there is an impact on laminated glass, it should hold together when shattered. Regular annealed glass, used in most home for example, will not. For this reason, some homes in areas of extreme weather will have laminated glass windows intalled.
Glass Laminating Film, or Window Laminate is typically used for the same reason, to hold glass together in the event of breaking to prevent injury. Also known as safety film, these self-adhesive films are typically applied to existing windows on the interior side of the glass. These safety films are also sometimes called hurricane film.
Thicker glass laminates, known as Security Window Film, offer more strength and are used to actually prevent break-through in glass and are used as a security measure in homes, businesses and automobiles. Some combinations of glass and security laminates even purport to be bullet-proof. You can view a demonstration of security window films online on YouTube.
